MINT DC Motor-Relay Controller

As variable-speed DC motors gain popularity in special effects devices, there is a need to control them effectively. MINT fills the vacuum—and it provides a bonus of four programmable relays. MINT is a close cousin to SPEARMINT. The difference is that SPEARMINT has a variable AC output for lamps, whereas MINT has a variable DC output for motors.
MINT plugs into a standard wall outlet near the device to be controlled. It connects to a SUGAR channel (multiple MINTs can be ganged on one SUGAR channel using our Breakout Box, or by using MINT's control loop-thru feature), and/or to a manual control console. Once connected, here's what it does:
Variable DC voltage. A number of user adjustments on the box let you set up MINT for a wide variety of DC voltage ranges (with a maximum output of ±24VDC, 250 mA max). The output can also be set for unipolar or bipolar operation. In unipolar operation the output voltage ranges from 0 to the maximum. In bipolar operation the output voltage ranges from minus maximum to plus maximum, with offset available. (This mode is particularly useful when you want bidirectional control of a DC motor.)
Four (4) independent dry contact "Form C" relays (24VDC, 1 amp max) with access to common, normally open, and normally closed contacts.
Projector reset circuitry. The furnished infrared transmitter/receiver diode or a user-supplied reset microswitch circuit may be used with the SPICE Automation HOME function to reset a special effect to its starting point.
Furnished with power cord, IR opto sensor assembly, reflective adhesive tape, (4) Phoenix 3-Pin connectors, and (4) Cinch-Jones 3-pin connectors
SPECIFICATIONS
INPUT/OUTPUT CONNECTIONS
CONTROL IN/OUT - 9-pin D-shell input from SUGAR or Manual Control., output to additional MINT(s) on chain
Pin assignments:
1-ground
2-relay 2
3-variable DC input 0-12VDC
4-relay 1
5-+12VDC out
6-no connection
7-home
8-relay 3
9-relay 4
DC OUTPUT - 0 to ±24VDC max., 250mA max.
DC OUTPUT CONTROL - a series of switches and potentiometers which set the DC output parameters:
RESET SPEED - potentiometer sets DC motor speed during RESET function (if jumper shorted)
BIPOLAR/UNIPOLAR - switch sets DC output to unipolar (0V to +V) or bipolar (-V to +V) mode
OUTPUT OFFSET - potentiometer adjusts center of bipolar voltage range
OUTPUT SPEED - sets maximum output voltage (±24VDC max.)
RELAY 1-4 - 3-pin Phoenix connector with N.O., N.C., and Common connections, 1 amp max at 24VDC. A 3-pin Cinch-Jones connector is wired to parallel contacts on each relay. These contacts are rated at 5 amp max., 220VAC.
OPTO/SWITCH RESET SENSOR - 4-pin Cinch-Jones connector used with remote sensor to establish projector reset point. Circuit activated by HOME command.
INTERNAL JUMPER CONNECTIONS
A series of internal, user-settable jumper blocks determine what happens when the HOME command is received (from SPICE Automation or remote console)
JUMPER 1 - can be set 3 ways, enabling MINT operation from optional control, from SUGAR I/O 1, or constantly
JUMPER 2 - when closed RELAY 1 will latch during reset
JUMPER 3 - when closed RELAY 2 will latch during reset
JUMPER 4 - when closed RELAY 3 will latch during reset
JUMPER 5 - when closed RELAY 4 will latch during reset
JUMPER 6 - when closed DC OUTPUT will latch to the speed set by the RESET POTENTIOMETER (Reset is completed when the infrared opto sensor detects the reflective tape, or when the reset mictroswitch closes during reset)
LINE-FREQUENCY JUMPER - selects 50Hz/60Hz line frequency
PANEL DISPLAYS
DC OUTPUT - red LED fades with dimmer level
RELAY 1 - green LED lights when Relay 1 closed
RELAY 2 - green LED lights when Relay 2 closed
RELAY 3 - green LED lights when Relay 3 closed
RELAY 4 - green LED lights when Relay 4 closed
POWER SUPPLY - red LED lights when power applied
MAXIMUM CABLE RUNS
SPICE INPUT - 150 ft. Since MINT mounts next to the projector, all other cables are of nominal length.
