Introducing the Digital Universe Plug-in for DigitalSky 2

The Digital Universe Plug-in for DigitalSky 2 tours the world’s most extensive and accurate 3D atlas of the universe compiled by the American Museum of Natural History’s Hayden Planetarium in New York City (AMNH). The plug-in is a result of the collaboration between AMNH (on the web at amnh.org) and Sky-Skan to bring AMNH's The Digital Universe (web link) to Full Dome theaters running DigitalSky 2.

AMNH has collected and sorted data from dozens of organizations worldwide to compile their atlas of the observable universe. The software team at Sky-Skan then brought in that data as a plug-in to take advantage of DigitalSky 2's freedom of movement and smooth transitions from one dataset to another. Both organizations are excited to see this project proving to be such a powerful teaching tool as well as simply stunning to experience live!

Let Sky-Skan take you though a short tour of the plug-in; then contact us to get a more in-depth tour in Full Dome. Enjoy your tour!

See amazing new sights!

The universe is home to some amazing and beautiful places to visit. Using the latest scientific surveys, Digital Universe carries audiences to places previously unknown. Displayed with stunning color and graphical effects, the experience captures the imagination while providing a rich education about the universe!

Don’t tell them, show them!

The unique Full Dome environment is a great place to both spark difficult questions and answer them on the Dome. With Digital Universe, a whole new realm of answers are yours to demonstrate.

Answer typical questions:

How far away are the stars?
What is a light year?
How big is the universe?

Inspire new ones:

How many stars are there?
What do other galaxies look like?
Are all galaxies flat?

Technical marvels need great manuals.

We want you to have the best experience with Digital Universe from the moment you start learning your way around. Extensive documentation and tutorials give you the tools to creating stunning shows quickly.

Go at your own pace.

Digital Universe is real-time (not pre-rendered). The time you spend on a topic is up to you. Adjust to your audience with ease because you’re in complete control of your theater. (Dont worry-—we offer flight training.)

Spend a day at the speed of light.

Learn the universe visually, starting with the distance our man-made probes will traverse by the year 2050: one light day.

Now playing: Earth.

With a tug of the mouse, we back away from the solar system out to a few light-years from Earth (a voyage of only a few seconds for us). Inside those small circles are exoplanets, our nearest planetary neighbors beyond the solar system. The ones inside the large sphere (the radiosphere) have been receiving Earth’s broadcasts for over 60 years!

An enormous database.

Observe how different the constellations look from thousands of light-years away. Large data collections let you explore the Milky Way and beyond.

Leaving home.

Another tug of the mouse and the Milky Way becomes just another dot. Here in extragalactic space we see not stars but galaxies full of stars. The concept of our place in the universe is given a new meaning as only Digital Universe and DigitalSky 2 can show.

A unique viewpoint.

Millions of light years away from our familiar solar system, countless galaxies fill the view. Here, colors represent densities. Select different data sets to focus on specific galaxy groups. What’s even more stunning is freely flying through millions of galaxies by simply moving your mouse!

The limits of the known universe.

Witness the structures of galaxies across billions of light-years of space. What you see is the most complete distance and position data ever collected about our universe.

Now it’s your turn to fly.
