Departure to 3D Worlds: Unique Presentation in Planetarium Hamburg

A world premiere was held recently in Hamburg Planetarium: For the first time, extremely bright images were projected in 3D on a classical planetarium dome.

"This is a taste of the future of planetariums, including that of the Hamburg Planetarium," said Director Thomas Kraupe enthusiastically.

Four high-resolution, extremely bright projectors combined with special optics and filters provide the perfect 3D illusion, with viewers finding themselves unexpectedly in a shark's mouth or inside nanotubes.

"At last we can understand the Universe, comprehend the distances," said Kraupe. "The amazing picture quality also allows the realistic depiction of environmental phenomena. Climate change and other processes on our planet can be presented in previously unimaginable ways."

With this technology, the planetarium would not only be the most brilliant star theater in the world; this technology opens up the possibility of establishing the planetarium as an international center of understanding of the Sun-Earth-Human relationship and as a training center on climate change. "We want to do this in collaboration with the Center for Marine and Atmospheric Sciences," said Kraupe. The retrofit of the Planetarium Hamburg with this technology, which was developed by the US company "Sky-Skan" and the German company "Infitec", would cost 1.3 million Euro.
